Last week the Chef Community hosted two summits in the US. Monday and Tuesday in Seattle, Thursday and Friday in New York. These Summits both included a day of open space discussions with topics proposed and selected by the participants and a day of hacking on various projects.
The team from Chef shared some really incredible community statistics to help kick-off the events. Since January 1, 2017:
Project | Number of Pull Requests (PRs) | People not working at Chef Software who have made PRs. |
Chef | 3,000 | 375 |
InSpec | 408 | 60 |
Habitat | 1458 | 37 |
That’s a ton of activity across three different projects that are seeing increases in adoption and the number of contributors.
Participants proposed a bunch of topics including InSpec with Test Kitchen, Using Chef with Docker, Using Chef in an air gapped environment, managing workstations with Chef, and SSL trust when bootstrapping nodes. Each of these discussions included the people who are most passionate about the topic at hand.
The community momentum continued into each Summit’s hack day. Participants proposed projects, teamed up to work on them, and demonstrated their work throughout the day. There were PRs from first time contributors and fixes for some long-outstanding issues. In New York, Sean Omeara (@someara) demoed an undocumented feature of ktichen-dokken that creates a cluster of machines for testing in test kitchen. Watching the demos throughout the day was really exciting!
The Chef Community is vibrant and continuing to grow. The introduction of projects like InSpec and Habitat allow us to welcome more people into the community. We are off to London for this week’s Community Summit and more time with all of our #cheffriends.
Join us in the Chef Community Slack to keep the conversations and collaboration going. Oh, and we’ll see you at ChefConf in 2018, May 22-25 in Chicago, Illinois!
