Chef 12 Client and Server Will Integrate with Enterprise Linux on IBM’s Mainframe, Extending Companies’ Ongoing Engineering Collaboration

SEATTLE – August 17, 2015 – Chef, the leader in automation for DevOps, today announced it is collaborating with IBM to deliver integration between the Chef 12 Client and Chef 12 Server and IBM’s enterprise Linux mainframe offering, LinuxONE. The joint engineering effort will deliver seamless integration between Chef’s IT automation platform and IBM z Systems, enabling users to easily manage and deploy Linux environments on IBM mainframe technology. IBM will be detailing this collaboration as part of its expanded investment in open source during the company’s 12:10 pm ET keynote today at LinuxCon.

Matt Ray, Director of Partner Integration for Chef commented:

“We’re experiencing rapid and accelerating adoption of Chef within the enterprise, making integration with IBM z Systems an important feature for our platform. We’re excited to collaborate with IBM on their support for open source technology and to ensure an awesome Chef and IBM user experience for years to come.“

Ross Mauri, general manager for IBM z Systems added:

“By collaborating with leading, open source partners, such as Chef, IBM is making the world’s most advanced system even more accessible to developers,” “Enterprises can more quickly incorporate emerging technologies to drive business transformation.”

The new collaboration between IBM and Chef builds on the comapnies’ ongoing engineering relationship, which has already delivered a range of integrations and capabilities:

  • Chef for AIX: Chef 12 delivered full AIX support including AIX resources like SRC services, BFF and RPM packages, and other platform-specific features. Now AIX systems can be fully integrated any systems managed by Chef.
  • Chef for Linux on POWER: Chef supports Linux on POWER for Ubuntu LE and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 BE and LE.
  • Chef and IBM for Openstack: Chef is core to IBM’s OpenStack offerings and IBM is active in the Chef OpenStack community. Chef is used to both deploy and consume OpenStack resources through knife-openstack, kitchen-openstack, Chef Provisioning, and OpenStack cookbooks.
  • Chef for SoftLayer: IBM’s SoftLayer Cloud also has Chef support. Chef’s knife-softlayer plugin allows users to easily launch, configure and manage compute instances in the IBM SoftLayer Cloud. There is also a Chef Provisioning plugin for SoftLayer.

By using Chef to automate IBM infrastructure, users can improve efficiency, reduce risk, and best support a DevOps approach to software development. For customers interested in beta-testing Chef’s integration with IBM’s Linux on z Systems, email ibm@chef.io.
