Chef is going BIG at AWS re:Invent

AWS re:Invent is just around the corner and all of us here at Chef are pretty fired up.  The show is sold out, so hopefully you were able to snag tickets. The biggest cloud event of the year will be chock full of innovative content, in-depth talks, and tons of great social events happening out and about in Vegas.

We have lots planned for this year’s show and we’re bringing a full contingent of Chefs to make it a memorable event. One particular session we’re looking forward to is having our own Adam Jacob join Amazon CTO Werner Vogels on Thursday Nov. 13, for a Founders Fireside Chat.  We also have a number of other, more technical, sessions as well as a brand new – and much larger – booth (#506) with demos, giveaways, and a friendly dose of #hugops.

Here’s a quick rundown of things we have going on at re:Invent

  • Chef on AWS: Deep Dive — Michael Ducy details specifics for easily deploying AWS infrastructure with Chef. Tips and tricks for becoming a Master Chef will abound.
  • Taking a DevOps Approach to Security — I will be joining our friends at Alert Logic to discuss how to embrace security in the fast-paced world of DevOps and Continuous Delivery.
  • Deploying a Low-Latency Multiplayer Game Globally: Loadout — Nate Wiger (AWS) and James Gwertzman (PlayFab) will share lessons learned from creating a global low-latency infrastructure architected to host a top-10 freemium multiplayer game, using AWS services in tandem with CloudFormation and Chef.  There will also be a demo of CloudFormation and Chef deploying Unreal Engine game servers. We may not be speaking in this session, but we’ll definitely be there!

AWS re:Invent tends to generate a lot of buzz around new developments and product announcements from Amazon, so it will be interesting to see what gets unveiled.  In the spirit of continuous innovation, expect to hear Chef make some awesome product announcements of our own during re:Invent.  Stay tuned!

As we all get ready for re:Invent, here are some great primers for exploring how well Chef integrates with AWS:

Watch: Scholastic recently hosted a webinar on how they migrated their entire online presence by using Chef to manage their production infrastructure and enable a shift away from legacy on-premise resources to running entirely in AWS.

Read: Prezi is super cool and wildly popular presentation software being used by tens of millions of people – and its all hosted on AWS with Chef. Check out details on their infrastructure strategy in this case study.

Learn: Chef has significant capabilities for provisioning and orchestration in AWS.  Our own Stathy Touloumis digs into specifics with this blog post showing how to stand up a sample application stack that integrates with AWS specific services like ELB, SQS, and SNS: all done using native Chef primitives inside of a recipe.

Visit: Whether or not you can make it to re:Invent, come see us at the AWS Pop-Up Loft in San Francisco for free training and consulting on taking advantage of the benefits of using AWS with Chef:

    • FREE full-day training bootcamps beginning Nov 3rd, 5th, & 7th.
    • FREE “Ask a Chef Architect” 1:1 sessions.  Set up an hour-long technical consultation to deep-dive on leveraging Chef in your AWS initiatives.  Appointments for these sessions are available all-day, at least twice monthly.
    • Evening events and meetups, including a followup from re:Invent that reviews tips and tricks for becoming a Master Chef on AWS along with newly shared customer experiences on Nov 19th.
