How Hype Cycles Work
Innovations and new technology pass five phases of the maturity cycle. According to Gartner, they use multiple market indicators to represent a true ' snapshot' of its expected value.

Infrastructure Automation
Infrastructure automation (IA) assists with streamlining scalable and reliable workflows in a company's technology infrastructure. Whether on-premises or in the cloud, deploying IA tools, IT and DevOps teams can effectively manage various service lifecycles without having to worry about creating new workflows. Gartner's research shows an increasing percentage of companies adopting IA solutions. List specific benefits, such as "enabling predictable delivery of operations" and "providing support for immutable and programmable infrastructures."
Immutable Infrastructure
Immutable infrastructure is a specific process pattern type when a type of infrastructure or application deploys; it does not change along with system updates. Instead, when significant updates occur, infrastructure and applications are replaced with new ones. Adopting this approach eliminates change management and common operational errors. Additionally, immutable infrastructure speeds up the upgrades, enabling rapid environment copying and making for more accessible troubleshooting procedures.
Policy as Code
Policy as Code (PaC) helps reduce the steps and roadblocks within configuration management and compliance. By shaking away security silos, PaC creates a programming language that moves everything (compliance and security requirements, along with user access) into a single pipeline. The Policy as Code creates a collaborative environment between engineers, operations, and security teams.
Continuous Configuration Automation
In short cycles, software engineers will use continuous delivery (CD) processes to produce useful software. CD also ensures that the software can reliably release at any time. CD can continuously adapt the software through dependable, low-risk releases to incorporate user feedback, market shifts, and business strategy changes. Gartner lists CD as one of the solutions to quickly breaking into the market. With how it changes another set of processes, it is no surprise.
Agile and DevOps have moved from emergent perspectives to proven collections of practices and tools that enable all organizations to deliver customer value faster and more reliably. These approaches emphasize learning and continuous improvement, and they continue to inspire innovative practices and technologies. These include ideas that promote both the technical: automation, continuity, and engineering — and the human: collaboration, community, and understanding.
Scaling Agile and DevOps efforts to the enterprise level requires meeting the challenges of managing the overarching value streams and optimizing aspects of human factors, organization, process, technology, and information exchanges (see recommended research for related notes). Organizations will only face the same challenges in the same sequence.
Working at scale continues to be a driver of progress and adoption in the innovations profiled in this Hype Cycle. Agile and DevOps are the default approaches to building and operating software, and their supporting practices and technologies must suit everyone, everywhere. At the same time, talent scarcity makes automation, optimization, and machine learning indispensable. In short, with fewer people, software engineering leaders must do more things involving more complexity for more stakeholders than ever before.
These factors influence innovations focusing on automation, artificial intelligence, and autonomy. A great way to think about this is working smarter, not harder, or doing more with less, which is always helpful and amplifies our current economy. The sweet spot for OKRS is to rise to the peak of the Hype Cycle. Software engineering leaders must assess whether these technologies are suitable for their organization at their current maturity.
The Gartner Hype Report for Agile & DevOps details how:
- Continuous availability, reliability, and resilience have been made famous by high-profile innovations like Chaos Engineering and Site Reliability Engineering. While nobody likes downtime, software engineering leaders must manage expectations for "always on" software with the expense and complexity of the practices and technologies needed to enable it.
- Security remains a perennial concern. Fast-moving innovations like DevOps Test Data Management and Continuous Quality reflect this, separate from a collaboration between security and software engineering teams.
- Individual teams often drive DevOps technology choices without considering the broader enterprise scope and strategy. Leaders must devise a DevOps strategy and create a culture that enables organizational learning with communities of practice. These communities must evaluate technologies to support a cohesive, federated DevOps initiative across autonomous teams. Avoid creating tool and capability "islands" that inhibit effective DevOps practices; platform engineering is an effective construct that helps in this regard. Toolchains are evolving from do-it-yourself approaches to platforms that maximize workflow.
