Habitat is Chef’s solution for application packaging and delivery: automation that travels with the application. This is the first in a multi-part series on the concepts behind Habitat. Application Automation is a big topic and relies upon multiple services from packaging, to service discovery, to runtime supervision, and deployment topologies.

Chef Promotes Ken Cheney to Lead Global Go-to-Market Strategy at Key Inflection Point for Company Chef Bolsters Executive Team with New Product Engineering and Revenue Marketing Leaders SEATTLE – November 10, 2016 – Chef, the leader in automation for DevOps, today appointed Ken Cheney as the company’s first Chief Marketing Officer (CMO).

The Habitat team attended and sponsored 2/3 of the major conferences for the Rust Lang community this year. The most recent being the first annual Rust Belt Rust Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on October 27th and 28th! Some of you might notice when reading those dates: this was only two days after the Habitat Community Summit.

The audit cookbook is a tool used to run InSpec tests and send the results to chef-compliance (either directly or via chef-server) or to chef-visibility in an automated way. We recently took on an overhaul of the audit cookbook to rewrite the content using chef handlers.

I was fortunate to present to the AWS Sydney North User Group on the topic “Build Better Containers for ECS with Habitat” (slides here). Since I was new to using Habitat and Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) I documented my findings.

The inaugural year of any freshly-minted FOSS community is full of new experiences. For the Habitat community, it’s no different: it’s certainly been a year of firsts. The Habitat Community Summit 2016 was a truly awesome and inspiring experience. The turn out and level of participation was absolutely fantastic for a first time event.

Chef is a company rooted in open source, so community matters a great deal to us. As DevOps goes mainstream, it’s important to ensure we building a strong, inclusive, and diverse community.
